Service: custom software development
Solution type: web application
Business area: software development tools, telecom
Client: a multinational telecommunications company focused on both wireless and wireline telecommunications; also engaged in software products development.
Period: 2002
Key problems
A number of the Client's products were usually installed on the same machine. Names of the variables were required in many different contexts. This caused multiple problems in cases when there was a name conflict between different programs. There was neither consistent convention for naming the variables, nor a central place to distribute any recommendations. When a new product was in development, the programmers could never review the names used in other products, so there was always a danger of name conflicts. To prevent name conflicts between different products and to have a central source of naming recommendations, it was decided to introduce a registry system. Since this project was for the in-house usage, limited resources were allocated for it. The solution offered by Arcadia, ZAO fitted the budget boundaries.
Solution
A web-based registry system was developed and installed on the corporate Intranet. It provides a useful service at very little overhead and bureaucracy effort. Developers access the system via web browsers. The risk of name conflicts has been eliminated.
